High-Quality Education and Training

return to priorities

After attending Ohio public schools, and proudly sending her three kids to public schools, Betsy knows the importance of a quality public education

Betsy believes we must…

  • Secure early childhood education for all families
  • Ensure every student in America has access to high quality public K-12 education
  • Reduce the cost of higher education, tackle student debt, and create pathways that help students graduate college debt-free
  • Invest in career transition programs for workers in changing industries

America’s public education system has been the foundation for our country’s success.  Investing in a quality, affordable public education system is key to the success of our economic future. We need to maintain and increase our support of public education at every level, from early childhood through high school, to internships and vocational school, college, and career transition programs.

The first five years of a child’s life are the most important, and we must expand access to high quality child care and education for those critical early years. A number of cities and states are successfully implementing early childhood programs and we should follow their lead. Public programs improve parents’ ability to work while providing children with important developmental opportunities. Early childhood education is an avenue to strengthen not just academic but also the “soft” skills so important to success in higher education and the workforce.

We must reduce the cost of higher education so people can further their education without being saddled by crippling debt. Expanding Pell Grants, rather than reducing them,  is critical to broadening access to affordable full-time and part-time college and vocational school for those who want to pursue an education. Additionally, the federal government lends to banks at very low interest rates and Congress should extend those low rates to student loans.

America’s workforce training needs to be better aligned with industries that are growing and expanding. Workers in changing industries are being left behind and it’s important that they have opportunities to retrain for good quality jobs. Incentives for companies to educate employees on-the-job can also create partnerships between private enterprises and surrounding communities.
